Add These Books to Your Greece Reading List

Female-focused books for your Greece women’s trip reading list

Caroline, one of our tour leaders, is the one who put A Thousand Ships on our Greek Islands Tour reading list. She has so many good ideas.

The Odyssey has been on our Greece reading list for a while now. I'd bet you read it a long time ago (high school English class, anyone?).

I was an English major and actually analyzed The Odyssey in a college literature class. So naturally, I'm excited to go see Christopher Nolan's mythic action epic in theaters soon.

A Thousand Ships, by Natalie Haynes, turns The Odyssey around and retells the Trojan War from the perspectives of the women involved—shifting the focus from the male heroes to the lives of the women in the story, like Cassandra, Penelope, and the goddesses.

It's clever and timely.

A few suggestions:

  1. Purchase A Thousand Ships before your next trip to Greece.

  2. Avid reader? Add Circe to your cart too. I read Circe when it first came out and loved it so much that I went to see the author speak in Seattle.

  3. You know what I love to do? Read a book about the destination while I'm there. So load Circe onto your e-reader before meeting us on Santorini.

Inspired by these two women-first novels (and that new three-hour Odyssey adaptation), you'll be more than ready for Athens, Naxos, and Santorini when you join us on a Greek Islands tour.

If nothing else, may these novels make it into your stack of summer reads. Enjoy the retelling of The Odyssey in your hammock, on your sun lounger, or in that really cozy chair.

That's one of my favorite perks of solo female travel—nobody's rushing you to put the book down.

Ready to see Athens, Naxos, and Santorini for yourself? Our women's small group tours to Greece are built for exactly this kind of trip—plenty of time to relax with a book, explore at your own pace, and travel solo without actually being alone.

Happy reading,
Regina Winkle-Bryan
