Walk the Camino With Challenge, Meaning, and Support

This is a slower-paced Camino experience, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. You’ll average around 11 miles per day, giving you plenty of physical challenge along with space to walk at your own pace, connect with other pilgrims, and enjoy moments of reflection along The Way.

You do the walking. We’ll take care of the details that make the journey possible.

For a thousand years, pilgrims have traversed the Camino de Santiago. Now it’s your turn to follow in their footsteps on the Portuguese Way, walking approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) from Portugal into Spain and ultimately to Santiago de Compostela.

Over seven walking days, you’ll follow ancient pilgrimage paths through medieval towns, quiet woodlands, vineyards, rural villages, and the lush landscapes of Galicia. With an expert Camino tour leader, luggage transfers, a support van, water and snacks along the trail, and your accommodations taken care of, you can focus on the experience instead of the logistics.

This journey might be a great fit if you’re ready for a physical challenge, but want the logistics and support handled for you along the way.

You’ll likely feel at home on this Camino if you:

  • Exercise regularly and are willing to prepare for several consecutive days of walking

  • Are comfortable walking roughly 10–12 miles a day across varied terrain

  • Want the accomplishment of walking the Camino without arranging your own lodging, luggage transfers, and daily logistics

  • Like the idea of traveling with a group of women while still having space to walk at your own pace and enjoy moments of reflection

  • Are comfortable staying in a mix of hotels, inns, guesthouses, and rural accommodations where amenities may vary

  • Don’t mind choosing and purchasing your own lunch along the trail

  • Are traveling solo and want a built-in community to share the experience with

This is a slower-paced Camino experience, but it is still an energetic journey. You’ll cover approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) over seven walking days, so preparation and regular exercise are important.

Training and Preparing for the Camino

Walking the Camino is an incredible experience, but your body will be doing real work. Preparing ahead of time will help you enjoy the journey rather than simply counting down the miles until you can take off your shoes.

Train for multiple days of walking

This is an Energetic journey with seven consecutive walking days of approximately 10–12.5 miles each. Prepare with regular walking and work up to longer distances and back-to-back walking days before your trip.

Pack light and layer up

Your main luggage is transferred each day and is limited to 40 pounds. Pack layers for changing weather and use our Camino de Santiago Packing List for specific recommendations.

Prepare for varied terrain

The Portuguese Way takes you along woodland paths, quiet country roads, ancient stone paths, rural trails, and through towns and villages, with plenty of climbs and descents along the way. Train on hills and varied terrain when possible.

Plan for your dietary needs

Vegetarian and vegan options can be limited in rural Spain. If you have dietary restrictions, consider packing trail mix, protein bars, or other supplemental snacks.

Break in your gear

Wear comfortable, broken-in trekking shoes and practice carrying your day pack before the trip. Taking care of your feet and preventing blisters is especially important when walking day after day.

Purchase travel insurance

Emergency evacuation medical insurance is required. Additional travel insurance covering cancellation, trip interruption, luggage, and personal belongings is also strongly recommended.

Travel Solo, Walk Together

Many women join the Camino on their own, but you won’t be navigating the experience alone. Before departure, you’ll meet your guides and fellow travelers during a pre-trip planning session so you’ll already know some familiar faces when the journey begins.

Once on the trail, you can walk at your own pace. Spend the morning chatting with new friends, take the afternoon for quiet reflection, or find your own rhythm somewhere in between. You’re part of a group, but you don’t have to be joined at the hip.

At the end of each day, reconnect over dinner, swap trail stories, and celebrate another day of walking behind you.

β€œI just completed walking the Camino (112 kilometers) with this group. From start to finish they were professional, knowledgeable, funny, kind and supportive. I cannot wait to book my next trip through Bold Spirit.”
β€” Laura H.

And after the trip, your private WhatsApp group makes it easy to stay connected with the women who shared the experience with you.
